(SEPTEMBER 20, 2024) Project POOCH is a program in Oregon that helps both young people in prison and shelter dogs. The program is at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn. Young people there learn how to care for and train dogs. At the same time, the dogs, which come from shelters, receive training to help them find new homes.
The young people work with the dogs every day, teaching them good behaviors and giving them attention. They also learn responsibility, patience, and how to work well with others. Many say working with the dogs makes them feel proud and helps them grow as people. It's not just about dogs—it’s about teaching life skills that the young people can use when they leave the facility.
The program has been running for over 30 years, and has helped many young people and dogs. Right now, there are about nine young people ages 18-21 in the program and about seven dogs at the shelter.
