Old batteries are difficult. They can cause fires. They can also pollute the environment. That means they can make problems for the air, water, and land.
Now Portland collects old batteries. People in Portland can recycle batteries with their glass. Here is what you do:
You put alkaline batteries in a quart-size clear bag.
Other batteries can go in the bag, too. However, you must first tape both ends of other batteries.
Then you close the bag and put it in the glass recycling bin.
If you cannot remove the battery from something, then you cannot put it in your recycling or trash.
