Do you pronounce these Oregon names correctly?

(JUNE 21, 2024) When people move to Oregon, they don't always know how to say the names of local towns, counties, rivers and such. A story in The Oregonian newspaper recently made a list of names that are often mispronounced. 

• Aloha - This is a city near Portland.  Say: /əˈloʊ.ə/

• Yachats - This is a city on the Oregon Coast.  Say: /ˈjɑːhɑːts/ 

• Heceta Head - This is a famous lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. Say: /həˈsiːdə/ 

• Gleneden Beach - This is also on the coast. Say: /ɡlɛnˈidən/ 

• Albany - This is a city near Salem. Say: /ˈɑlbəni/

• Madras - This is a city in Central Oregon. Say: /ˈmædrəs/

• Molalla - This is a city in Clackamas County. Say: /məˈlɑːlə/ 

• Wallowa - This is a city in Eastern Oregon. Say: /wəˈlaʊwə/

• Nyssa - This is a city on the border between Oregon and Idaho. Say: /ˈnisə/

• Willamette - This is a river that flows through Portland. Say: /wɪˈlæmɪt/

• Portland - This is the largest city in Oregon. Say: /ˈpɔːrtlənd/ 

• Glisan and Couch - These are two streets in Portland. Say: /'glisən/ and /kutʃ/

• Oregon - Yes, even the state name is sometimes mispronounced. Say:  /ˈɔrəɡən/
