(MAY 02, 2024) Music has a special power to affect our feelings, and now some schools are using it to help students calm down and get ready to learn. At Rosland Elementary School in La Pine, they start each day with music and a short moment to think quietly. This helps the students settle down and prepares them for their classes.
The program used by the school is called Mindful Music Moments. It begins with a short activity that helps the children focus, followed by three minutes of calming classical music. The principal of the school, Deborah Buduan, believes that these quiet moments help the students to concentrate better when it's time to study.
Not only the students benefit from this program, but teachers do as well. Teachers like McKensey Nicks and Tylyn Johns find that the music helps them and the children start the day feeling less stressed. They notice a big difference because the kids are much calmer and ready to learn when they go into the classroom.
The idea of using music like this was started by a group called The Well, and now many schools across the country are doing it. It's not expensive for schools to join, and often the costs are covered by sponsors. Both the teachers and students have reacted positively, enjoying the peaceful start to each school day.
