Beaverton organization offers equestrian vaulting and other horse-centered therapies and activities

(MARCH 7, 2024) In Beaverton, a unique equestrian vaulting team called the Flying Stars is captivating hearts. These young gymnasts are part of the competitive team at Forward Stride. They perform acrobatic routines on horses. While the idea might sound like a scene from a movie, it's a real sport gaining popularity.

Vaulters stand, spin, and dance on horses, guided by a handler and using a special strap instead of a saddle. Forward Stride offers various equine therapies, including this extraordinary equestrian discipline.

Recently, the Flying Stars achieved top honors in the Equestrian Vaulting USA championships. Starting on stationary barrels, the young vaulters learn teamwork and safety before progressing to horses. Then they master required moves, such as extended arm riding and kneeling poses. Competitors are judged on strength, flexibility, balance, and harmony with the horse.

Vaulting is just one of the therapies with horses at Forward Stride. The organization works with about 200 people weekly. The organization helps them to build life skills and physical abilities. It helps people with disabilities and other differences.

The vaulting program has classes that are both recreational (for fun) and therapeutic (for health). The classes are for both adults and children. Forward Stride welcomes new people who want to try out this unique gymnastics-on-horseback experience. Prices for vaulting lessons range from $32 to $42.50, with private barrel lessons available for those wanting to explore the sport.
