(DECEMBER 1, 2023) It is not easy to become a lawyer. You need to study for several years. Then you usually need to take a stressful test. It's called the bar exam. Then you get a license to be a lawyer.
The Oregon Supreme Court changed that. Now students do not need to take the bar exam. They can work with another lawyer for 675 hours. They show their work to the state in order to receive a license to be a lawyer.
The new program begins in May 2024. It is not common. Only two other states give students an alternative to the bar exam. Wisconsin is one. New Hampshire is another.
In Oregon, 531 people took the bar exam in 2022.
