Oregon is losing glaciers

(NOVEMBER 3, 2023) Glaciers are big ice mountains. But these ice mountains in the western United States, including Oregon, are melting. That makes it hard for people, plants, and animals to get water, especially in summer.

Scientists study glaciers. They use old maps and pictures from space. They look for changes.  They learn many things.

For example, 50 places are not glaciers anymore. They are now too small. And many glaciers in Oregon and Washington have already melted away. More glaciers might melt in about 50 years. So the beautiful snowy mountains will not look the same in the summer.

But there is some good news! A glacier on Mount St. Helens is growing. It's getting more snow and ice.
