(OCTOBER 13, 2023) Oregon has lots of wolves. Colorado wants more wolves. So the two states are working together. They will move 10 wolves from Oregon to Colorado.
Wolves used to live in Colorado. They went away a long time ago. Colorado wants wolves to make nature better.
Colorado wants to bring back 30 to 50 wolves in the next three years. The state wants to have an equal number of boy and girl wolves. The wolves must be healthy and not hurt animals on farms. They should be around 1 to 5 years old.
The states will use helicopters and planes to catch the wolves in December. They will check the wolves' health. Then they will take them to Colorado. The wolves will be released in Colorado to help them start a new home. This work will continue until March.
Washington, Idaho, and Montana might also give some of their wolves. However, some people in Washington are worried about losing their wolves. In Oregon, wolves are protected by law in the western part. The wolves are not protected by law in the east. Colorado will only take wolves from places where they are not protected by the law.
