Simple tips for talking to homeless people
(OCTOBER 6, 2023) Portland has many people without homes. Some have tents. Some have campers. Some sleep outside on the street. Some people want to talk to homeless people. They want to help them. Portland Monthly magazine has suggestions.
First, say hello. Ask them if it's OK to talk.
Second, be polite. Don't touch their things without asking.
Third, bring useful things like soap, shampoo, socks, or blankets. Ask if they need them.
Finally, respect their privacy, just like you would want.
People without homes are often treated badly. So others should be friendly and kind. Knowing and using the name of a homeless person can make them feel important. But if they ask for something you don't want to do, it's OK to say no. Finally, if someone seems upset or out of control, you can call 911. You can ask for help from experts in mental health.
It's important that we help others in our community. But we also must respect them.
