Oregon will experience solar eclipse October 14, 2023

(OCTOBER 6, 2023) On Saturday, October 14, 2023, Oregon will experience an annual solar eclipse. The moon will move between the Earth and the sun. It will look like the sun has a black circle on it. People will see a "Ring of Fire". That means people will see the sun around the edges of the moon.

"We'll see the silhouette of the moon. A lot of people are amazed how the moon can cover the sun," says Jim Todd. He works at OMSI. That's the science museum in Portland.

The eclipse will start in Oregon at 9:13 a.m. It will end in Texas at 12:03 p.m. It will be visible in parts of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.

This eclipse is different from the eclipse in 2017. That was a total solar eclipse. The moon looked bigger than the sun. The sky was very dark. This year, the moon will not look as big. The sky will not be as dark.

Do you want to watch the eclipse? It's very important to protect your eyes. You should never look at the sun directly. And you should never use sunglasses, binoculars, or a telescope. Instead you can wear special glasses. They let you see the eclipse without hurting your eyes. People can get free eclipse glasses from OMSI or a Travel Oregon Welcome Center.
