Shoppers can now pay with their palms at some grocery stores in Oregon

(JUNE 23, 2023) Amazon is bringing special machines to Whole Foods grocery stores in Portland. These machines let people pay for their things by using their hands.

To use the machine, people first need to sign up for a program called Amazon One. They put their credit card in a device and then put their hand on a glowing circle. The machine scans their hand and remembers it. This process is quick, taking less than a minute.

When people go shopping, they still need to scan the things they want to buy. But when it's time to pay, they can just put their hand above the machine for a second and the payment is done. Amazon thinks this is easier because people don't have to look for their wallets or bags to find their credit cards anymore.

Some people are worried about their privacy with this new technology. They are concerned that Amazon might use their information for advertising or tracking. But Amazon says it takes the privacy of customer data very seriously. The company has made the machine safe, and the hand images are kept secure. If someone decides to stop using Amazon One or if they don't use it for a long time, then their hand data will be deleted.
