Oregon lawmakers say OK to self-serve gas

(JUNE 23, 2023) Oregon lawmakers decided to change a rule that has been there since 1951. They voted to allow people to pump their own gas at some gas stations. But the rule says that at least half of the pumps should still have staff to help people if they want. Gas stations cannot charge different prices at the self-service pumps and the ones with staff.

Some fuel companies wanted this change because it's hard to find enough people to work at the gas pumps. They say that most gas stations already have half of their pumps closed because of this. Some drivers are happy about this change because they don't have to wait for someone to help them. But others think it's better to keep full-service gas stations because they find it more convenient.

The new rule has passed the Senate. Now it needs to be signed by Governor Tina Kotek in order to become a law. Once it's signed, it will start right away. Oregon used to be one of two states where only attendants could pump gas. The other state is New Jersey. But Oregon has made some changes in the past. For example, it allows self-service at night in certain areas and during emergencies like wildfires or heatwaves.
