(JUNE 2, 2023) TriMet has buses and trains in Portland. They are in other cities, too, from Beaverton to Gresham.
Last week, TriMet decided to increase the price of a ticket. The price increases 30 cents in January 2024. The new price will be $2.80.
The price for students, elderly, or disabled people will increase 15 cents. The new price for those people will be $1.40.
Many people don't like the increase. They say people cannot pay the increase. Some people went to the meeting. They chanted, "Fare increase is not fair."
The word "fare" is another word for ticket. You pay a fare to do something. "Fair" sounds the same. However, "fair" is treating everyone in a good way.
Most of the money for TriMet comes from a tax. The money from tickets is a much smaller amount. But TriMet says it needs more money. It needs to pay workers. It needs to pay bills.
