Leaders think about giving $1,000 each month to homeless and low-income people

(MARCH 3, 2023) Some Oregon leaders want to help homeless people. They have a new idea. They want to give people money. They want the state to spend $25 million.

The money is for people without homes. The money is also for people with low incomes. These people can receive $1,000 a month from the state. People can use the money in any way.

Some people do not like the idea. They think people will spend the money on drugs or alcohol. However, state leaders looked at other programs around the country. Most recipients were people of color and single mothers. Most of the money was spent on housing, food, and other basic needs.

The program is only an idea now. It is not yet a law. State leaders continue to think about it. They will decide later.
