Oregon had crazy weather last year

(JANUARY 6, 2023) The weather in 2022 was extreme. That means it was very strong and unusual. Here are some examples:

      • The weather was very wet from January through June. In fact, there was snow in April. Portland received 1.6 inches of snow. Troutdale and Hillsboro received 3 inches of snow. That is late for snow in most of Oregon. In fact, it was the first time for snow in April since at least 1940. It was also strange because temperatures the week before were in the 70s.

      • The summer was very hot. In Portland, five days had temperatures of 100 degrees or more. Many more days were above 90 degrees. That is warmer than usual in Oregon. In fact, it was the third longest heat wave in Portland history. (A "heat wave" is a time of hot weather.)

      • There were also dry hot winds in August and September. This kind of weather is dangerous for wildfires. October was also warmer than ever.

      • In December, there was a bad ice storm. Temperatures were very cold. That was a problem for many people because they were traveling for the holidays. Highways were closed, and many flights were cancelled.
