Preply is a language company. It studies this idea. It makes a list of states. Some talk faster. Some talk slower.
Where do people talk the fastest? Minnesota! People in Minnesota speak about 5.34 syllables per second. (A syllable is a part of a word with a vowel sound.)
Oregon is the second-fastest state. People in Oregon speak 5.33 syllables per second.
What about Portland? Portland is the fastest-talking city in the country! People in Portland speak about 5.38 syllables per second.
Where do people talk the slowest? Louisiana! People in Louisiana speak about 4.78 syllables per second.
But who likes to talk the most? New York! People in Oregon do not speak the most. They don't speak the least. They are in the middle.
