Oregon landlords may increase rents by almost 15% beginning January 1, 2023

(SEPTEMBER 23, 2022) Finding housing can be difficult. It's true in Portland. It's true all around Oregon. Many people want the same apartments and houses. So rents are often high.

In 2019, the Oregon Legislature started to limit rent increases. Last January, landlords in Oregon were able to raise rent by only 9.9%. That changes again January 1, 2023. Rents can go up again. This time, landlords in Oregon can increase rents by up to 14.6%.

Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) reported the average rent for a one-bedroom home in Portland. It is $1,500 per month. So starting January 1, that rent could go up to $1,719 per month. This rule is only for homes 15 years or older.

OPB says that a landlord must provide a written notice to the renter if the rent will increase.
