Oregon voters might change the state constitution in November

(JULY 8, 2022) Oregon voters will make a decision in the November elections. They will vote on a change to the state constitution. The change requires better attendance by legislators. ("Legislators" make the laws in our government.)

In the past, some legislators did not go to work. They were upset about new laws. They did not want the new laws. So they did not attend meetings. That was a problem. Other legislators could not work either. They could not vote without everyone.

The new change in the constitution says legislators must meet. They can have nine unexcused absences. ("Unexcused" means without permission.) Lawmakers with 10 or more unexcused absences cannot seek re-election. That means they cannot continue working after their legislator job ends.

Oregon citizens will vote in November. A "yes" vote will change the constitution. It will require better attendance. A "no" vote will not change the constitution. Things will stay the same.
