Juneteenth holiday celebrates freedom

(JUNE 10, 2022) Juneteenth is a new national holiday. It is a short form of June 19. Juneteenth became a national holiday in 2021. It honors the freedom of slaves in the United States.

President Lincoln freed slaves in 1863. His orders were called the Emancipation Proclamation. But it took a long time for news to travel to Texas. It took a long time for people to follow the new law.

So June 19 was a special day in 1865. The news arrived arrived in Texas. The law was clear: All slaves were free. Now everyone knew.

Now, Juneteenth honors African American freedom. People think about the problems of the past. They think about making the future better.

There are many Juneteenth events in Oregon. In Portland, for example:

  • Parade, Saturday, June 18, 11am on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard between Ainsworth and Russell

  • Festival, Saturday, June 18, 12pm-7pm; also Sunday, June 19, 11am-6pm Lillis-Albina Park at the corner of North Flint and North Russell
