TriMet is hiring bus drivers and MAX train operators

(MAY 27, 2022) TriMet operates the buses and MAX trains in the Portland metropolitan area. The agency lost many employees during the pandemic. Now the agency wants to hire new bus drivers and MAX operators. TriMet says it's the biggest hiring push in 52 years.

The salary for employees starts at $25.24 per hour. There is also a $7,500 hiring bonus (one-time payment). MAX train operators are paid more. Employees also receive health insurance, paid sick leave, paid vacation, and money for retirement. After three years, full-time bus drivers make more than $68,000 annually.

Jeff Flanagan started as a bus driver. Then he learned to operate the MAX trains. “It’s rewarding knowing that you’re doing something that’s worthwhile,” Jeff said. “It’s rewarding knowing that you’re helping people get to where they need to go."

To apply for a job at TriMet, people need:

  • high school diploma or GED (general education diploma)

  • valid driver license for three years

  • clean driving record for past three years

  • passing CDL permit tests (TriMet will provide the training for a Commercial Driver's license, but applicants must obtain an Oregon or Washington Commercial Learner's Permit before starting employment with TriMet)

  • criminal background check

  • medical exam

  • drug screen (including for legal recreational marijuana)

TriMet says its bus drivers and MAX operators have "a job with a view" because "every day looks different from your office on wheels."

Part-time and full-time positions are available. For more details: trimet.org/drive
