A famous Oregon lighthouse is for sale

(APRIL 8, 2022) Do you like lighthouses? Would you like to own one? Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is near Cannon Beach, and it is for sale. The cost? $6.5 million.

But you might want to think twice about buying it. Tillamook Rock Lighthouse has a nickname. It's "Terrible Tilly." That's because the water and the weather make it dangerous to get there and live there. It's on a small island, and so it is also expensive to operate.

The lighthouse is 141 years old. The government stopped using it as a lighthouse in 1957. One person bought it and hoped to live there, but it was too difficult to maintain.

The current owner is Mimi Morissette. She tried to change the lighthouse into a columbarium. That is a place to store the remains (ashes) of people who have been cremated. She said there was room for up to 300,000 urns (containers). But that business never became popular. The ashes of only about 30 people were put there.

Now the island is home to seabirds and sea lions. The government protects the wildlife on the island. This means there are many rules for the new owner, such as visiting the island only at certain times of the year.
