A new law to recycle old mattresses

(APRIL 1, 2022) Do you ever see a mattress on the side of the road? An old mattress is difficult to throw away. They don't fit in a garbage can. So they are often left like trash. It's a big problem. It's ugly, and it's unsafe.

Now Oregon has a new law. It requires mattress makers to start a recycling program. Every county needs a place to take old mattresses. People will pay a little, but it will make recycling easier.

That's good news. Why? People throw away about 20,000,000 mattresses every year in the U.S. Now there will be fewer mattresses on road and in landfills.

It's also good news for workers. Why? The new recycling program will bring new jobs.
