(MARCH 4, 2022) The Historic Columbia River Highway is a popular road. It follows the Columbia River. There are many places to stop. Visitors can look at the Columbia Gorge. They can also hike in the forest or visit famous waterfalls, such as Bridal Veil Falls.
In 2022 visitors need a permit to drive on this special road. Permits are necessary between May 24 and September 5. Drivers need to show permits between Crown Point and Ainsworth State Park.
People can buy the permit online beginning in May. Visitors on bicycles, public transportation, or a tour do not need a permit. Parking fees still apply at recreation areas along the road.
Why do drivers need a special permit? The purpose is to reduce crowds along the highway.
“This is a modest step to help address an increasingly serious problem,” says Don Hamilton. He works for the state of Oregon. “Everybody knows how bad the congestion has been getting in the gorge."
Nearby popular areas also require permits. These include hiking on Dog Mountain and visiting the famous Multnomah Falls.
“This is Oregon’s crown jewel, the gorge, and we’ve got to make sure that we can provide access and we can provide a way to keep it a good and effective and safe experience for people,” says Hamilton. “I think people are going to find a better and smoother experience in the gorge when we get this going.”
