Portland city workers might go on strike

(JANUARY 7, 2022) City workers in Portland are unhappy. They want a better salary. The city says no.

So city workers might strike. They might stop working. They might not return until there is an agreement.

Workers and the city have talked for a long time. They can't agree. So the workers might go on strike soon. That means many city services could stop.

The city offered workers a 1.6% increase, and maybe 5% in the future. But workers say it costs more to live in Portland. They say the cost of living has increased more than 6% since last year. The workers also say the city pays less than a business. So many workers might leave the city for other jobs.

The workers will meet with the city again January 11.
