Brookings limits free meals for homeless people

(NOVEMBER 5, 2021) Brookings is a small city. It is on the Oregon coast. It is near the California border. It has about 6,000 people.

Churches in Brookings work together. They provide meals for homeless people. They try to make at least one free meal each day.

St. Timothy's is one church. It allowed people to live in its parking lot. Neighbors were upset. They said there was litter, noise, and trespassing. (Trespassing is when someone enters without permission.)

So the city made a new rule. Churches can offer meals to homeless people only two times a week. Why? Because the churches are in residential zones. That means they are near homes.

The church disagrees with the new rule. It continues to provide free meals. The church says it was there before the residential zones.

"We're not going to stop feeding," says the church.
