The number of new COVID cases in Oregon is growing again

(JULY 17, 2021) The number of people getting sick from COVID-19 had been decreasing for many weeks. Now the number is growing again. The number is increasing in Oregon and across the country.

The Oregon Health Authority reported 1,318 new cases of COVID-19 last week. And the number of people in a hospital grew from 66 to 104.

Dr. Jon Hitzman is a public health officer in Umatilla County. He said "It's not a question for unvaccinated people if they're going to get the virus. It's when they're going to get it and how sick they're going to get."

Some people worry that there will be new orders, such as a return to wearing masks. Dr. Dean Sidelinger works for the state. He says it's possible. It depends on how many people are getting sick. And it depends on how many people need to go to the hospital.

“Cases are increasing. And this is certainly due to the increasing percentage of the delta variant in Oregon,” said Tim Heider. He works for the Oregon Health Authority. “If you are fully vaccinated, you are well protected from COVID, including the delta variant. If you are not vaccinated, make a plan to do so. And take precautions like wearing a mask indoors and in outdoor crowded places until you are vaccinated."
