Oregon schools must teach in person this fall, but they decide masks and physical distancing rules

(JUNE 26, 2021) Oregon's governor will end the requirement for masks or physical distancing by July 1. The Oregon Department of Education has new plans, too. The state agency promises full-time, in-person instruction in the fall. Things like masks and physical distancing will now be "advisory." That means the state encourages them. However, it does not require them.

“The path is clear. Oregon schools are ready to once again be vibrant places for learners, staff, and their families," said Colt Gill. He is the director of the Oregon Department of Education.

The state has some new rules. Schools must provide full-time, in-person education for all students every school day. In other words, remote teaching is not enough. The state agency still recommends masks and physical distancing, but it won't require those things. Each school will make its own decisions.
