(MAY 31, 2021) One of Portland's nicknames is the "City of Bridges" or sometimes "Bridge City." That's because there are many bridges for vehicles and trains across both the Willamette and Columbia rivers. Now Portland has one more bridge. However, this bridge is a pedestrian bridge across an interstate.
Flanders Crossing is for pedestrians (people who walk) and bicyclists (people who ride bicycles). Construction began in 2020. It cost $9.5 million. It is 200 feet long and weighs 355,000 pounds. Two massive cranes built the bridge over the Interstate 405 highway at Flanders Street. It joins the neighborhoods of Northwest Portland with the Pearl District near downtown.
Portland Bureau of Transportation suggests that the bridge might experience 9,100 crossings per day.
The new bridge opens June 4, 2021.
