Oregon gets one more seat in the U.S. Congress

(MAY 3, 2021) More people have moved to Oregon recently. According to the 2020 census, the state's population is now 4,237,256. That is an increase of more than 10% from the last census in 2010.

The growth in population has given Oregon an additional seat in Congress. That is because the number of U.S. representatives depends on the number of people in a state. The total number of representatives is always 435. However, states with more people send more representatives to Washington than states with fewer people. And the number of representatives changes based on the census. The census is an official count of people every 10 years. Oregon now has six members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The total population of the U.S. in 2020 climbed to 331,449,281. That is a 7.4% increase. Other states that gained seats were Texas, Colorado, North Carolina, Florida, and Montana. The states that lost seats are California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Now the state of Oregon needs to divide the state into six districts. This can be a problem if lawmakers do not agree on how to do this.
