At least two Oregon universities will require students to get COVID-19 vaccinations

(APRIL 26, 2021) Although the number of new cases of COVID-19 has been steadily increasing recently in Oregon, many colleges and universities are still hoping to bring students back to campus for classes in the fall. They believe that COVID-19 vaccinations will help. In fact, two universities in Oregon have announced a vaccination requirement.

Willamette University is one of them. It is a private university in Salem. On its website, it says, "Willamette University is dedicated to returning, as much as possible, to a vibrant campus community, including a return to pre-pandemic in-person learning and activities .... At the same time, Willamette is dedicated to the health and safety of the community. The COVID-19 vaccines currently available in the United States are highly effective at preventing COVID-19, as well as at preventing serious illness even in those who do get COVID-19. For this reason, ... Willamette is requiring all students, faculty, and staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19 ... beginning Fall 2021."

Any vaccine authorized for use in the U.S. is acceptable, but the full number of doses must be completed at least two weeks before arriving on campus. Some exemptions are possible, such as for medical or religious reasons.

Lewis and Clark is a small private college in Portland. It will require its students to have the COVID-19 vaccination, too. Its website says, "As part of our health and safety approach for the fall 2021 semester, we will require proof of COVID vaccination for all students. All students will need to be fully vaccinated, or have an approved exemption, by October 15, 2021." The policy does not apply to online students.

Oregon State University will not require proof of vaccination. Neither does the University of Oregon. Others, however, are still considering the option and will announce a decision soon.
