Portland has dozens of free fridges and pantries to help people who are hungry

(MARCH 1, 2021) Many people in Portland are homeless. Many more people in Portland experience food insecurity. That means that they do not always have enough food to eat. PDX Free Fridge is a group of people who are trying to solve that problem.

(PDX is the airport code for Portland. It is often used to refer to the city or things in the city. "Fridge" is short for "refrigerator.")

PDX Free Fridge is a community effort. It is not a formal organization. However, its volunteers have a clear mission. They work together to increase access to free food and vital supplies. How? By creating a network of independent fridges and pantries (a place to store dry foods, like flour or cereal). In other words, these are places where people can get free food and other supplies. For example, in addition to food, people can get hygiene items, pet supplies, and small pieces of clothing, like gloves or socks.

Free fridges are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Visitors can take or leave items from any location at any time. People can go to the PDX Free Fridge website to find maps to community fridges. The website also has instructions to help people make a free fridge or pantry in their own neighborhood. The group accepts money, too.
