The legend of "Silent Rock" is loud and clear

(FEBRUARY 22, 2021) Many places in Oregon have legends about them. Legends are old stories. One legend is about "Silent Rock" on Highway 26. It is between the towns of Rhododendron and Government Camp near Mt. Hood.

When you go by this rock, you must be silent:

  • No radio

  • No phones

  • No talking

The legend says that bad things happen if you make noise.

People who live near "Silent Rock" tell stories. One boy says his brother played music loudly. Then the car stopped working. It ran out of gas. But he had filled the gas tank that morning.

Another girl said she was riding a school bus. She and her classmates were going skiing. Some students made noise at "Silent Rock." Those students had problems later. One student broke a ski pole, and another student lost her gloves.

There are many stories, but nobody knows where or when they started -- or if they are true.
