(February 15, 2021) Outdoor activities are more popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. Forest Service wants to reduce crowds in order to protect visitors. Therefore, the government agency will require hikers to have permits this summer.
Visitors will need permits for 19 popular trails in the Three Sisters, Mt. Jefferson, and Mt. Washington wilderness areas between May 28 and September 24, 2021. The permits will cost $1 per day per person. Furthermore, all 79 trails across the three wilderness areas will require permits for overnight use. Overnight permits are $6 per trip for up to 12 people and up to 14 days.
The U.S. Forest Service will make some exceptions for Pacific Crest Trail hikers, volunteers, and hunters.
People can buy permits beginning April 6 from recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. People can also purchase permits from U.S. Forest Service offices.
