New plans for COVID-19 vaccinations in Oregon

(JANUARY 18, 2021) Last week, Oregon's governor announced more COVID-19 vaccinations for more people. Then she received news the federal government could not send more supplies. Now most people must still wait. Meanwhile, a more contagious version of the virus was found in Oregon.

The new strain, or type, of coronavirus is more contagious. That means it spreads more easily and more quickly. It was originally found in the United Kingdom. Now it is in Oregon, too. But this strain of the virus does not seem to be more severe or deadline.

“Confirming this strain locally is distressing,” said Dr. Jennifer Vines. She is the Multnomah County health officer. “Until we have enough vaccine, we must continue using face masks, distancing, and limiting our social interactions.”

Scientists believe the COVID-19 vaccines protect against the new strain of the virus. However, the distribution of vaccines in the U.S. has been a problem. Each state is responsible for vaccinations in their area.

There is a limited supply of vaccines now. Oregon had restricted vaccines to elderly people and health care workers. Last week, Oregon Governor Kate Brown announced the expansion of the vaccination program to include teachers and people as young as 65 years old.

The governor changed that plan quickly. She said the federal government is not sending enough supplies. So now there is a new plan. Vaccinations for teachers are available January 25. Then Oregonians over 80 years old can get a vaccination in February. People in their 60s and 70s receive a vaccination later.

Vaccinations for others probably will not begin until May or June.
