Portland neighbors want to protect very old, very large tree

(JANUARY 11, 2021) Trees are common in Oregon, even in cities. Some trees grow quite large. Sequoia trees are good examples. But one particular tree in Northeast Portland has grown so big that it is dangerous to the house next door.

The tree is in the Sabin neighborhood, and it is about 100 feet tall. It is about 115 years old. It is more than 120 inches in diameter.

The problem is the tree's roots. They are destroying the foundation of the house next door. No one can live in the house because it is too dangerous now. So the city wants to cut down the tree. This will cost over $20,000 plus repairs or demolition of the house.

Claire Bollinger and Shelby Wright are two neighbors. They like the tree and want to keep it. They think the city is making a mistake, and they think the city has not been clear about its plans.

"Sequoia trees are incredibly long-lived," said Bollinger. "They're incredibly healthy, incredibly sturdy trees."

"It's a neighbor to me," said Wright. "It's a living thing I've had by my home and as part of my life for more than a decade."

Thousands of people have signed a petition or given money to protect the tree. The neighbors are still waiting for a decision from the local government.
