(JANUARY 4, 2021) A new year brings new laws in Oregon. Here is a summary:
Cigarette tax: The tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products increases. People will pay $2 more per pack of 20 and $2.50 more per pack of 25. The money will be used to provide health insurance for families with low incomes.
Driver's license: Residents of Oregon no longer need to provide proof of legal presence in the U.S. to get a state driver's license or state identification card. However, they still must provide proof of name, identity, and Oregon residency.
Drug decriminalization: Penalties for having small amounts of drugs are lower, and they can even be waived if the person participates in a drug counseling program. However, if it happens again, then the penalties increase.
Facial recognition: Private businesses will be banned from using facial recognition technology in public spaces. This includes restaurants, gyms, and places of recreation, public gathering, exercise, or entertainment.
Minimum wage: Starting July 1, the minimum wage in Oregon changes:
Standard: $12/hour
Portland metro: $13.25/hour
Nonurban counties: $11.50/hour
