Oregon Health Authority offers tips for a safe Halloween

(OCTOBER 3, 2020) October 31 is Halloween. People often celebrate this holiday by wearing costumes, visiting "haunted houses," or going to parties. Many also give candy to children who come to their door in costumes (trick-or-treating).

People often crowd together. They share food. These are high-risk activities because of COVID-19. Similar holiday gatherings for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day led to more sick people. So the Oregon Health Authority asks people to think carefully about how they celebrate Halloween this year.

“If you dress up in a costume, be careful to plan a costume that allows you to wear a face covering,” says Dr. Dean Sidelinger. He is the State Health Officer. “Halloween masks will not protect you or others from coronavirus." Instead, people should wear a cloth or disposable face mask in addition to their costume.
