Oregon sees a spike in COVID-19 cases

(SEPTEMBER 25, 2020) Last week, the Oregon Health Authority reported data about the coronavirus in the state. It predicted fewer cases. But today, OHA reported 457 new coronavirus infections as well as 3 new deaths. This was the highest number of cases in one day since counting in Oregon began in February.

Dr. Dean Sidelinger is the state health officer. He says one reason for the increase is probably the recent wildfires. Many people had to leave their homes and spend time near others. Also, college students have returned to campus. Finally, Sidelinger says some people do not follow social distancing guidelines.

“We are concerned about these increases,” Sidelinger said. “We’re asking every Oregonian to take steps to protect themselves.”

As of September 25, 542 people in Oregon have died from COVID-19, which is caused by the coronavirus. Also, the total number of cases in Oregon is 32,314.
