Portland family posts riddles in window for people walking by

(MAY 22, 2020) The coronavirus and COVID-19 means people are staying home a lot. Many families get bored and want something interesting to do. One family in Southwest Portland came up with a unique idea.

The Formigle family lives in Southwest Portland. Ian and Tonka are the parents. Luca and Annika are the children. They see a lot of people walking in their neighborhood to get exercise and fresh air.

Annika put a sign in the window for the walkers. It said "Stay safe and have a good day." People stopped to read the sign.

“My dad said we should turn it into something people could think about during their walk,” said Annika.

Her father said, “We wondered what would happen if we gave the people something more entertaining than just the one sign. That led to a conversation about using riddles.”

According to Macmillan Dictionary, a riddle is "a question that seems impossible or silly but has a clever or funny answer."

For example: What can you catch but not hold? Answer: A cold.

The family chooses riddles together. They post the question one day. Then they post the answer the next day.

“When I walk my dog,” said Annika, “a lot of people stop me and say thank you for the riddles.”

The "Riddle House" is at 2636 SW Talbot Road in Southwest Portland. You can't miss it. Just look for the signs!
