Tips for driving in the winter weather ahead

(JANUARY 10, 2020) The weather forecast for this week includes colder temperatures. There is also the possibility of snow and freezing rain. That means winter is finally here, and people should be ready for it. And if you must travel in bad weather, AAA Oregon (the American Automobile Association in Oregon) suggests you "re-train your brain for snow, ice, and rain."

Here's what else AAA Oregon says:

    • Know before you go. Check traffic cameras and weather alerts to pick the safest route.
    • Stay rested and alert. AAA research shows that drivers who sleep only four and five hours a night are as impaired as drivers with a blood-alcohol level above the legal limit. Also, watch for downed tree limbs and potholes and give yourself plenty of time to react.
    • Keep calm. Keep your eyes and attention on the road and ditch the distractions.
    • Change your posture. Adjust your seat position so that you can make smooth, precise movements and easily reach the pedals.
    • Dress right. Select layered clothing that provides warmth, comfort, and freedom of movement. Never attempt to add or remove layers while driving.
    • Buckle up! Insist that everyone wear their seat belt at all times.
    • Look out. Never blindly follow your GPS. If a road doesn’t look properly maintained, turn around.

Before you go, make sure your vehicle is ready:

    • Check windshield wipers and washer fluid.
    • Inspect tires and brakes.
    • Know your traction options, such as snow tires or chains.
    • Pack extra clothing, food and water, a basic first-aid kit, jumper cables, a flashlight with fresh batteries, basic tools, and flares or reflective triangles are must-haves for a winter safety kit.

Now that you are ready ... will it really snow in Oregon this week? We shall soon find out.
