Statewide ban on plastic bags includes five-cent fee on paper bags

(JANUARY 3, 2020) There is a new state law. Stores and restaurants can no longer provide free plastic bags at the checkout. Stores can still provide paper bags. However, they must charge customers at least five cents for each paper bag.

There are some exceptions. Grocery stores can still provide free plastic bags for bulk items or produce. Restaurants can still provide free paper bags.

The purpose is to encourage customers to bring their own reusable bags. The goal is to reduce the use of plastic bags. Why? Plastic bags contaminate the recycling system. Plastic waste also contaminates the oceans and kills animals.

Some stores are selling reusable bags that are made from fabric. Some customers are bringing used plastic or paper bags and leaving them for others to use. Many people do not like the fee, but they understand the problem. They bring their own reusable bags from home now.
