(DECEMBER 1, 2019) Near Scio, Oregon, there is an animal refuge called the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary. It is home to almost 200 farm animals that have been rescued from abuse and neglect. This includes pigs, cows, horses, chickens, sheep, and goats.
Among the residents are Helen, a blind bison, and Oliver, a young calf. From the beginning, they made an unlikely pair. However, their connection continues to grow stronger.
Helen came to the Lighthouse Farm Sanctuary a few years ago. She was nervous around other animals. She often stayed by herself, alone.
Oliver was born in February 2017. He soon became friends with Helen. Now they are together all the time.
Gwen Jakubisin is the director of the animal sanctuary. She says the change in Helen has been significant. Helen, says Gwen, acts almost like a nanny who takes care of a baby.
