Portland lowers speed limit in the city

(APRIL 10, 2019) Portland wants change. The city wants slower cars near houses. Fast cars are a problem. Walking across a street can be dangerous. Slower cars are safer, says the city. There are fewer accidents.

The speed limit in the city of Portland was higher. Most streets have a new speed limit. Now the speed limit is 20 miles per hour.

Many people like the new rule. There are many yard signs. The signs say "20 is plenty".

"Everyone needs to slow down," says Dylan Rivera. He works for the city of Portland.

Other cities in Oregon want lower speed limits, too. They ask the state government for help. Only the state government can make the change.
