Oregon surfer was attacked by a shark

(MARCH 8, 2019) Surfers like the ocean waves along the Oregon coast. Sharks do, too. When they meet, it can be dangerous. There are signs at some beaches to warn people about the sharks.

On Tuesday, March 5, Nathan Holstedt was in the water. He was waiting for a good wave. Then something hit him and pulled him under water.

It was a shark. He hit the shark with his surfboard. Then he tried to paddle back to the shore.

Nathan is OK. However, the shark bit his surfboard. It almost bit his leg.

Oregon has at least 17 different kinds of sharks. They are different shapes and sizes. Most sharks in Oregon are harmless. That means that they are usually not dangerous.

Shark attacks do not happen very often in Oregon. A story in The Oregonian newspaper says that there have been only 14 shark attacks since 2000. A shark bit that person, but she lived. There is no record of anyone dying from a shark attack in Oregon.
