What is a Winter Storm Watch?

(FEBRUARY 23, 2019) What is the weather like today? The answer depends where you are in the state. Some parts of Oregon might have bad weather.

The National Weather Service recently announced a Winter Storm Watch for some parts of the state. A Winter Storm Watch means it is possible that a winter storm might produce heavy snow, sleet, or freezing rain. A "watch" means that it might happen, or it might not. People should know about it and be prepared for it.

A Winter Storm Warning is different. A warning means that confidence is high. It is very likely that a winter storm will produce heavy snow, sleet, or freezing rain. There will definitely be problems with traffic, for example.

The National Weather Service also sometimes issues a Winter Weather Advisory. This is less dangerous. An advisory means people should be cautious. There might be small amounts of snow, sleet, or freezing rain. The weather might affect travel.

The National Weather Service is part of the U.S. government. It provides weather, water, and climate data. It also provides weather forecasts and warnings for the protection of life and property. It wants to make sure that everyone is prepared for bad weather.
