Oregon kills sea lions to protect salmon

(JANUARY 12, 2019) The state of Oregon thinks sea lions are a problem. The state thinks the sea lions eat too much salmon. They might eat all the salmon.

Some sea lions travel over 100 miles from the ocean to eat salmon. The government thinks the sea lions learn from each other. The government wants to stop this.

The state tried to scare the sea lions. It tried to trap the sea lions. Now the state kills sea lions. It killed four sea lions at Willamette Falls. The state also killed sea lions near Bonneville Dam.

The federal government says the state can remove 93 sea lions. The state says it probably will kill only 40 or 50 sea lions.
