Oregon sends a Christmas tree to the Capitol

(NOVEMBER 5, 2018) This year, the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree comes from Oregon.

The tree is a noble fir from the Willamette National Forest. It is about 80 feet tall. This is the first time this kind of tree has been chosen.

Now the tree travels 3,000 miles from Oregon to Washington, D.C. It will be on the West Lawn of the Capitol Building. There will be a public tree-lighting ceremony in December.

Seventy smaller trees will also be sent to Washington, D.C. to decorate government buildings and public spaces. Oregonians will contribute 10,000 handmade ornaments.

This is the second time Oregon provided the Capitol Christmas tree. In 2002, a tree was selected from the Umpqua National Forest.
