(OCTOBER 6, 2018) - Oregon usually has only one dangerous spider. It is the black widow spider. Now we have a new dangerous spider in Oregon. It is the brown widow spider.
A brown widow spider has a special red or orange hourglass on its stomach.
The brown widow spider usually lives in Africa, Florida, or California. However, an insect control worker found one in Oregon City this year.
How did it get here? We do not know. Maybe it came by car or plane or a traveler's suitcase.
The brown widow spiders will probably die soon. They do not usually live in the cold weather of Oregon.
People should be careful. A spider bite can make people sick. Do you see one? Take a picture and send it to plant-entomologists@oda.state.or.us.
