Hi everyone! I’m Tara Murino-Brault, and I’ll be your instructor for Basic Design: Color Foundations. I’m into my 20th year of teaching at PCC, and I have a huge passion for both art and teaching! I teach a range of classes, including Screenprint, Relief Printmaking, Intaglio Printmaking, Basic Design (115 & 116), Painting, and Drawing.
In my classes, we’re not just going to study art and design—we’re going to dive in, get our hands dirty, and really discover what makes a piece of art work. We’ll explore how the foundational elements of design, including a systematic approach to understanding color, can help us tell stories, communicate ideas, and evoke emotions. By studying the science of color theory, relationships, and harmonies, we’ll uncover how to use color effectively and intentionally in our work. I’m excited to meet each of you and see what you bring to the table. Let’s make this term a creative and fun adventure!
My Teaching Philosophy
At the heart of my teaching philosophy lie foundational principles that prioritize exploration, experimentation, expression, diversity, and inclusivity. As an artist and educator, I am deeply committed to the value of art education at a community college. My philosophy combines a focus on visual arts with a student-centered and culturally responsive approach. Relationships and intentional listening are the cornerstones of my teaching method. I believe that by gaining technical skills, fostering creativity and critical thinking, problem solving, and time management, students can integrate their knowledge and apply these skills in various aspects of their lives. My goal is for students to see the broader context of their work and understand how it can be meaningful and applicable beyond the classroom. Creating a safe and inclusive learning environment where students encounter a diverse array of knowledge that reflects an understanding of our communities and the world is important to me. I want students to engage with art in a way that enriches their lives and enables them to make meaningful contributions to society. Visual art literacy offers students a fresh perspective, allowing them to see the world in a new light. It enables them to interpret and analyze visual information, fostering critical thinking and creativity. This skill empowers students to engage with the world more deeply and meaningfully. As a committed teacher, I strive to be a lifelong learner and recognize that what I do has an impact on our students. The transformative power of education lies in the ability to elevate my students.
