The College operates in many different environments using a wide range of equipment and provides a safe and healthy environment, using reasonable risk assessment for its students, staff, and visitors. We ensure that all students are suitably inducted and trained by competent staff in safe working practices to required skill levels.

Everyone has an important part in creating and promoting a healthy College, by having respect and value for their own safety and everyone around them.

The College’s Health and Safety Policy can be accessed from the Student Portal as well as the Health and Safety pages on the College website. Please ensure you observe all health and safety requirements as part of your studies.

Fire safety

1. Prevent fires by being careful with all heat sources.
2. Find where the nearest exit is.
3. Get to know the fire routine and obey all fire notices.
4. Always keep passages and staircases clear.
5. Keep fire doors closed.

If you discover a fire (no matter how small):

1. Raise the alarm by pressing the nearest fire alarm call point button and shout "FIRE, FIRE, FIRE"
2. Warn people in the area of the fire.
3. Leave personal belongings and go directly to your nominated assembly point.

On Hearing the Fire Alarm:

1. Act calmly - close all doors and windows (to stop fire spreading).
2. Help others (with mobility issues) to refuge areas if necessary, (Carers usually take wheelchair bound to refuge area). Tell fire wardens and fire warden based in reception where these people are, to allow the fire services to help them out of the building.
3. Leave by the nearest exit and go to assembly point.
4. DON'T stop to collect personal belongings.
5. DO NOT USE THE LIFT.
6. Report any missing persons to College Staff.
7. Estates Staff will call the Fire Service.
8. NEVER re-enter the building until officially told to by Estates Staff.

First aid

There are first aid trained personnel and a first aid room is always available at the College. If you need first aid help, contact Reception (telephone extension 207/dial 0 in an emergency ), or a trained member of staff . A list of trained first aid staff is on display on notice boards on each floor. Remember to report any accidents, no matter how small to a member of College staff.

Accidents / incidents

Any accident, incident or 'near miss', no matter how slight the injury or damage must be reported to a staff member immediately, so the College can take appropriate action to prevent further harm.

Use form HSF4 to report an accident – unexpected event causing personal injury

Use form HSF3 to report an:

• INCIDENT – event causing damage to equipment or facilities
• NEAR MISS – event that potentially could have caused injury or damage
